Chapter 1
Lovell's POV
My boyfriend was one of the world’s top mercenaries.
Three years ago,he took on an urgent,top-tier mission,an S-level classified operation. But before he left,he made me a promise.
"I'll marry you when I come back."
I believed him.I held onto that promise through more than a thousand days and nights.
A month ago,he finally came back.I thought those three long, agonizing years of waiting had finally led to something.
But last night,I overheard something that shattered everything.
Standing outside his study,I heard him talking to his second-in-command.
"Are you really going through with the wedding to Miss Porter? What about Jaylee and Zach?Zach is over two years old now,and he’s your child. This secret won’t stay hidden forever."
The man continued,"Back when Jaylee got pregnant with your child, you faked that three-year mission just to be with her.If Miss Porter ever finds out—"
Before the man continued,I heard my boyfriend's cold,cutting-edge voice as he interrupted,"She can’t find out!Ever. She’s the only one I’ll marry.Tell Jaylee to keep her mouth shut and keep that kid quiet!"
Zach?Two years old?His biological child?
So while I was here waiting and holding onto his promise for the past three years,he had met someone else and even had a child with her.
As the realization sunk into me,I stumbled back into the bedroom.Later,I dialed my grandfather's number with trembling hands.
"Grandpa,is the foolish heir of the Stokes family still alive?I’m willing to marry him."
——
He paused in disbelief.
"Lovell? You’ve waited three years for your boyfriend. What happened? You swore you wouldn’t marry anyone else."
"The eldest son of the Stokes is reclusive and mentally slow—if you don’t want to go through with it,Grandpa will protect you with everything I’ve got.You don’t have to—"
I wanted to speak, but the words caught in my throat. The tears came instead, fast and uncontrollable.
Everyone in the city knew I was in love with my bodyguard,Horace Mitchell,my mercenary bodyguard. From eighteen to twenty-three,I loved him with everything I had.
Three years ago,he promised me,"I'll marry you when I come back."
I clung to those words like they were sacred.I waited for him through rumors and whispers, people saying he had died in the field or simply abandoned me.
I ignored them all.I kept my head down and counted the days, believing he’d keep his word.
Here in our city, people knew I,Lovell Porter, was sharp and decisive in business, but had one weakness—Horace.
No wonder Grandpa didn’t understand.Even I hadn’t expected that Horace’s so-called“mission”had been a lie all along.
Even so,I didn’t explain a word, but on the other end of the line,Grandpa must’ve sensed my pain. After a long silence,he gently said,"If your mind is truly made up,then I’ll support you.The Stokes are very influential. At least with them, you’ll never be mistreated."
"The day after tomorrow,I’ll send a car to pick you up.Handle your affairs before then,"he added.
Even after the call ended,I sat frozen, phone still pressed to my ear.
Horace’s words echoed endlessly in my head, tearing through me like a thousand needles.I could barely breathe from the weight of the betrayal.
So all this time,he’d already cheated. The whole“mission”was nothing but an excuse to build a life with another woman and their child.
The thought alone made my knees give out,and I collapsed to the floor.
Because of the nature of his job,I could never contact him freely these past three years.I could only wait for his messages, calls, and occasional returns, sometimes a few days later or sometimes weeks.
Chapter 2
Lovell's POV
When I had no news from him,I couldn't fall asleep, worried he might text me,but also worried he might not.
Night after night,I cried myself to sleep, holding onto memories of our five years together until his mission ended and he finally came back to me.
Now,in my daze and heartbreak,I didn’t even notice him walk into the bedroom until he spotted me sitting on the floor.
“Lovell? The floor’s cold. What are you doing down there? Are you feeling alright?”
His voice was full of concern, his eyes soft and steady, just like they used to be.
Horace had always treated me well through our five years together before he left, and even in this past month since his return.Truth was indeed too cruel.
I quickly locked my phone and forced a smile.
“I think my blood sugar dropped for a second.I just got a little dizzy.I’m okay.”
He let out a sigh of relief and gently helped me up from the floor.
“Let’s go to the beach tomorrow.I’ll have my second-in-command book the tickets. You’ve always loved the ocean, haven’t you?We could also take our wedding photos on the beach. How does that sound?”
He was still as thoughtful as ever. But after what I’d just heard, his sweet words only made me feel sick.
“I don't think it's a great idea.”
He froze for a second, then reached out and softly brushed the back of my hand.
“What’s wrong,Lovell?Did something happen? We promised each other, remember? No secrets between us ever.”
Hearing that, that was the final straw.I looked him straight in the eye.
“Horace, are you sure you’re not hiding anything from me?”
He paused, then gave me that familiar, gentle smile.
“What could I possibly be hiding from you?”
I fought the sting behind my eyes and gave a small nod.
“Alright.Let’s sleep.I’m tired.”
The next morning, loud knocking woke us up early.
Horace went to open the door.Standing there was a woman, eyes red from crying, holding a toddler who looked about two or three years old.
“Horace,he’s been crying for his dad all night. He wouldn’t sleep.I know you told me not to come here, but I didn’t know what else to do.”
Panic flickered across Horace’s face.He quickly turned around to see how I’d react and quickly made up a reason.
“Lovell, don’t get it wrong. This is Jaylee, our team medic. Her husband was my teammate,a close friend. He died during a mission.I’ve just been helping them get by because I felt sorry for them,so—”
Before he could finish, the woman,Jaylee Horton, interrupted with a choked voice.
“Miss Porter,I know you two are getting married.I don’t mean to cause trouble. But the child keeps asking for his dad.I just—”
I cut her off, locking eyes with Horace.
“The kid wants his dad. So,why come to you?Are you his father,Horace?”
Horace shot Jaylee a sharp look, then turned back to me.
“Of course not,Lovell! He’s over two years old,how could he be mine? His real father died saving me,so I’ve been helping them since. The boy probably sees his father in me,so he's calling me‘dad.'It’s just all a misunderstanding.”
I looked closely at the boy’s face.He was still so young, but his features looked a lot like Horace's.
But Grandpa was coming to get me tomorrow night, and I didn’t want to make a scene now,so I swallowed the pain clawing at my chest and nodded.
"Alright.Take care of them then.I’m going back upstairs to get some more rest.”
With that,I turned and walked away, but Horace followed behind me,step by step.
Chapter 3
Lovell's POV
“Lovell, are you mad at me?”Horace asked gently.“Don’t worry,I promise I won’t let them interfere with us—”
But before he could finish,Jaylee’s voice broke through again, trembling and pitiful.
“Horace, this past month, while you were gone, the kid hasn’t been eating or sleeping well. His health’s starting to worry me.I want to take him to the hospital for a full checkup, but I'm not familiar with this city. Can you come with us?”
“You know I have nothing left, just Zach.If something happens to him,I...I don’t think I could go on.”
I turned to look at Horace. He didn’t say a word, but his eyes gave him away.
He was worried.Worried about that child.
As such,I gave a small nod.
“He’s just a kid.If he’s sick,it’s serious.You should go with them.After all,his father died saving your life.”
Horace’s face visibly brightened.Even his tone sounded lighter.
“I’ll go with them and come right back.Lovell, thank you.Really.Thank you for understanding.”
He turned quickly and headed for the door, scooping the child up in his arms like he’d done it a thousand times before.
He didn’t even stop to change out of his pajamas. He was that worried.
I stood there and watched as the child nestled against Horace’s shoulder,so naturally,so trustingly, like a family.
And I watched the three of them walk away together.
It felt like someone had dropped my heart into a bottomless pit.The deeper it sank, the quieter everything became until I couldn’t feel anything at all.
It wasn’t until night fell completely that Horace returned, with Jaylee and the child.
I hadn’t moved from my bed all day.
When he walked into the room,he looked guilty, and that alone made my chest tighten.Something was wrong.I could feel it.
In a serious tone,he explained,“Lovell, the boy isn’t doing well. The doctor said he needs long-term care. And they don’t really know anyone here.”
Seeing me waiting for his next words,he continued,“This house is big enough.Would it be alright if they stayed here for a while?”
I shut my eyes hard, trying to keep the bitterness from rising in my throat.
This morning,he had promised they wouldn’t affect our lives. But now,he wanted to bring them into our home.
When I opened my eyes again,my gaze was steadily cold.
I was just about to speak when I realized Jaylee was already standing at the door, with the boy’s hand in hers.
“Miss Porter, please don’t be upset with Horace. He’s only worried about my kid. He’s been there for me ever since I was pregnant. He stepped in where my husband couldn’t.It’s natural that the baby’s attached to him.”
Looking worriedly at her child, she continued,“He’s still so young.I don’t know how to explain to him that Horace isn’t his father. But if you’re uncomfortable,I’ll leave with the child right away.”
Jaylee kept going with her sweet, pitiful voice, each word carefully placed like she knew exactly what she was doing.
But I wasn’t listening anymore. My eyes were locked on the necklace around the child’s neck.
My breath caught.
I clenched the bedsheets with both fists as tears suddenly streamed down my cheeks, uncontrollably.
I looked up at Horace,my voice hoarse, raw, barely recognizable.
“That necklace around his neck, what is it?”
I was sixteen when Grandpa hired Horace to be my personal bodyguard,at a very high price.
Back then,my life wasn’t in danger. But when I turned eighteen,Horace got caught up in a vendetta with someone from the underground world.
It all happened so fast.Gunshots were exchanged in the chaos.
And somehow,my body moved before my brain could catch up.I threw myself in front of him, taking the bullet that was meant to kill him.
Chapter 4
Lovell's POV
Horace’s enemies were killed on the spot that night, and he barely escaped with his life. The bullet that nearly ended mine was just half an inch from my heart.
When I finally woke up in the hospital,Horace was slumped by my bedside, crying his eyes red.His voice shook as he swore,“From this day on,my life belongs to you,Lovell. For as long as I live,I will never let you down.”
To seal his promise,he had the bullet taken from my chest made into a necklace.Holding my hand tightly,he repeatedly kissed it,like it was sacred.
“From this moment forward,I’ll never forget who this life belongs to.This necklace will serve as my good luck charm. As long as I’m alive,I’ll never take it off,”he added.
Maybe it was the sincerity in his red,tear-filled eyes,or maybe it was the way he kissed that necklace so tenderly.
All I knew was that day,my heart melted completely.
But now?
That very same necklace, the one Horace swore he’d never part with unless he died, was hanging quietly around a child’s neck.
Horace opened his mouth a few times,as if searching for the right words, but in the end,he said nothing.
And I saw it,just for a second—the look of smug satisfaction in Jaylee’s eyes.
“Oh,the necklace?”she said, almost casually.“I went into early labor. The doctors said Zach might not make it.Horace was scared,so he gave the necklace to my kid for protection. He’s worn it ever since the day he was born.”
Proudly,she continued,“And honestly,it’s worked!Ever since then—”
“That’s enough!Shut up!”Horace snapped,cutting her off coldly.
He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her out of the room. The child, startled by the sudden yelling, burst into loud, frightened sobs.
But I didn’t have the strength to care anymore.
All I could hear was Jaylee’s voice, echoing over and over in my head.
Horace didn’t come back.
I don’t know how much time passed, but at some point I heard muffled sounds, low and obscene, creeping through the quiet halls.
I pushed back the covers, climbed out of bed,and followed the sounds.
They were coming from Jaylee’s room.
A man’s voice, rough with desire but trying to stay in control, said,“Don’t.Lovell’s still home. What if she hears?”
And then a woman’s voice replied,“She won’t.I locked the door.She won’t hear a thing.Come on,Horace.Don’t you miss me?It’s been so long.”
The rest played out just as you’d expect.
And right as things reached their peak,Jaylee turned her head and met my gaze from where she lay beneath Horace.
Her eyes sparkled with triumph.
That was when it hit me.
She wanted me to see this. She left the door open on purpose. She wanted me to find out and see the truth between them with my own eyes.
Even so,I didn’t say a word.
I simply lowered my gaze and gently closed the door for them.
The next morning,I came downstairs early. At the dining table sat Zach, quietly eating from his little bowl, spooning cioppino into his mouth.
When he saw me,his face lit up with a bright smile and cheerfully greeted,“Good morning,Aunt Lovell!Want some cioppino? It’s so yummy—”
But before he could finish the sentence, his face turned red and his eyes widened. His little hands clutched his chest, and then he toppled from the chair and hit the floor hard.
I froze.
For a second,I couldn’t even move. But then instinct took over, and I rushed forward to help him.
Whatever was going on between the adults, this child was innocent.I couldn’t just stand by and watch him suffer.
But before I could even reach him,Jaylee’s piercing scream shattered the air.
Chapter 5
Lovell's POV
“Lovell! What do you think you’re doing?!”
Jaylee rushed over, yanking me aside as she knelt down to check on Zach. She called his name over and over, her voice shaking with panic.
When he didn’t respond,she stood up,frantically inspecting the cioppino he’d just eaten.Then she turned to me,her eyes red with fury,and roared,“Miss Porter!If you don’t want us here,just say it,we’ll leave!How could you do this to a child?He’s only three!You could’ve killed him!”
While I was still confused, she went on with her accusation.“He’s been allergic to seafood since he was born!I never let him touch the stuff! How cruel do you have to be to feed him cioppino?!”
I stood there, stunned, trying to process the wave of accusations crashing down on me.I could only manage to deny it weakly.
“I didn’t…I didn’t give it to him…”
But Jaylee didn’t give me a chance to explain. She cut me off with another sharp accusation.
“You didn’t?What, are you saying,a three-year-old ordered it himself?Do you really think a toddler knows how to order food?!”
Without looking at me,Horace stormed forward, scooped the convulsing child into his arms, and turned toward the door.
“Enough. We’re taking him to the hospital.”
He didn’t need to say it.I could feel it in the way he moved, the way his back was turned to me.
He blamed me.
Five years together, and I could read him without a word.
As he passed me,I reached out and grabbed his wrist, forcing myself to speak.
“Horace,it wasn’t me.”
He paused, but with tight brows,he said,“Let go.I need to get him to the hospital.”
Before I could say anything else,Jaylee shoved me hard.
Caught off guard,I fell back and landed hard against the edge of the coffee table.Pain exploded through my lower back, making me cry out.
But Horace, who used to panic at the slightest wrinkle in my brow, didn’t even flinch. He didn’t turn around or stop.
His entire focus was on the child in his arms.
I watched their figures disappear through the doorway as my phone buzzed on the floor beside me.
It was a text from Grandpa.
[The car’s almost there.Pack up and come out.]
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, gritted my teeth through the pain, and dragged myself up.
I didn’t take much, just my ID and my bank card.
Then I walked out the door without looking back.
Once I got into the car Grandpa sent,I took out my phone and typed a single message to Horace.
[Let’s break up.]
