Our adopted son was actually born to my husband and his mistress, and the marriage I was so proud of was nothing but a cold world.
In that case, I disappeared forever.
Chapter 1
"James!!!" I screamed as I saw James stumble down the stairs. I stood frozen as I watched three-year-old James' tiny body roll down the stairs.
I quickly ran down the stairs to check on him. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw Adam holding James, who was bleeding from the head.
I saw James whisper something to Adam and his face immediately changed. I saw an angry look directed at me that made my heart sink. He had never given me that look in our ten years of marriage, not even when we found out I was infertile.
Adam quickly picked James up and left the house. The hospital. That's what I thought. I hurried to catch up. When I got outside, I couldn't find Adam's car.
I jumped into my car and drove quickly to the hospital we used to go to. The thirty-minute drive left me numb. I had completely neglected James, the baby I had been raising for the past three years.
As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I rushed to the emergency room. I saw Adam pacing back and forth. I approached him and asked him how James was doing. Adam just negatively shook his head.
"We need to do a blood transfusion. But there is no AB-negative blood available. Do you know anyone who has it?" a nurse said as she left the room.
"Adam, you have it. You can give it, right?" I said. Adam just shook his head in the negative, so the nurse left us to find a donor and contact another hospital.
"Why can't you, Adam? Why, don't you love James? He's our son, even if he's not our flesh and blood." I saw Adam look down after I finished my words.
"I'm sorry I'm his biological father. I can’t be a donor for him."
Adam's words stopped my world. Lost in my own words. The man who loved me betrayed me more than three years ago. I was raising a baby boy who was my husband's biological child.
"Agatha, listen to me. I didn't mean to cheat on you. James was born by mistake one night. I didn't even know he existed until a few days before I brought him into our house." I didn't believe his words.
"You have to believe me. After I took James in, I never had anything to do with that woman. You have to believe me."
I still looked at him skeptically for his explanation.
"I promise, you are the only one in my heart. You're the only one I love. You know how much I love you. I will never intentionally disappoint you." Adam finished his words took my hand and kissed it. He tried to calm me down.
"We better pray for James' safety," I said trying to distract Adam.
I was worried about James because I considered him to be my son. I didn't want anything bad to happen to him. The doctor left the room and told us to follow him. We followed the doctor into the room.
"James is doing quite well. He needs a blood transfusion because he has lost a lot of blood from his head wound. We have sewn up the wound. The bandages must be changed daily and kept out of the water. You can come back next week to open the stitches. After the transfusion, James will be able to go home," the doctor explained.
We both nodded and thanked him before leaving the room. We walked into the room where James was. I felt sad to see the three-year-old boy lying weakly with a bandage on his head.
"Agatha, you better go home first. I'll wait for him. The transfusion will take about three hours. When it's done, I'll take him home." I just nodded, trying to process all of this.
I walked down the hospital hallway to the parking lot with uncertain thoughts. I saw Caroline, Adam's secretary, entering the hospital. I stopped and watched her. I had been suspicious of her for a long time. She seemed very fond of my husband and tried to take every opportunity to get close to him. I saw her go in the direction from which I had come.
I followed her, keeping my distance. It was true what I thought. She was coming to see my husband. I peeked through the crack in James' room door and tried to listen to the conversation that was about to take place.
"Babe. How's James?" she asked.
"He's fine."
"I never should have let you take James to Agatha to be cared for. Look at my little boy, injured now. He could even die because of her carelessness," Caroline said.
My heart stopped. My head was spinning from the fact that Caroline was James' mother. The woman Adam was having an affair with. How could Adam lie to me? He said he was no longer in contact with James' biological mother.
"It wasn't all her fault. James said he ran away. But it's still Agatha's fault because she didn't stop him." I heard Adam defend for me.
"It's better to give James back to me. I will take care of him full-time. Let me keep him safe. There is nothing better than the love of a biological mother." Caroline put her arm around Adam's neck while she said that.
"I can't, Carry. Agatha already knows that James is my biological son," Adam refused. Maybe he had a little conscience about me.
"You can take me in. You can tell her I'll be your personal assistant and nanny for James. Besides, we can spend more time together." I saw Caroline's hand rubbing Adam's chest. I held back my tears when Adam didn't say no to her.
"Alright. Starting tomorrow, you will live in my house." My heart broke when I heard his agreement. Caroline looked happy and immediately pulled Adam into a passionate kiss.
I really couldn't hold back my tears. I immediately left the hospital with quick steps. Isn't life cruel?
Chapter 2
I was watching a movie with James when I heard the front door open. I got up to greet my husband, followed by James, who was always happy when Adam came home. I found my husband carrying a suitcase and Caroline smiling sweetly.
"Dad! Mama!" James shouted, making me smile bitterly.
"Honey. From today, Caroline will not only be my secretary, but she will also help you take care of James. I feel that you are too tired to do everything yourself." I heard Adam's words and joined his game.
"Maybe I do need help," I replied. I watched as Caroline took James inside, leaving Adam and me alone. "Why is James calling her mama?" I asked when I was sure neither of them would hear.
"That... Do you remember a couple of times I brought James to work because you were sick or needed to do other things, including some of our business?" I just nodded to his question. "Caroline helped me take care of him. After a while, James got very close to her and wanted to call her mama, and Caroline was also very happy to take care of James and felt he was like her son." I just nodded and pretended to believe what he said. Even though I already knew that Adam was lying.
We walked into the living room and I saw James playing with Caroline, looking very happy.
"I'm going to take a shower and put Caroline's suitcase in one of the guest rooms near James' room." I just nodded.
"Let me get dinner ready." Adam kissed my head before going upstairs.
I went into the kitchen and started preparing dinner. Just a simple dinner, salad, and fried chicken. After I finished preparing dinner, I went into the living room to see the three of them playing and joking together. It was a picture of a happy family that broke my heart even more.
I cleared my throat to get their attention and said, "Dinner is ready. They nodded and we walked into the dining room. After helping James into his chair, we began to eat.
Dinner this time was filled with laughter and warmth. But I felt cold. I felt like I wasn't part of this family, even though I was the hostess. I couldn't imagine what would happen if James found out that I was not his real mother but Caroline. Would he still love me? Or would he hate me?
Isn't life tragic? I loved the children so much and always wanted to have them, but I couldn't. Then my husband slept with another woman and had a beautiful son. He brought him to me to raise him. He let me bond with him without knowing the truth. Now he brings his mistress to live with us? Am I still sane? Or have I gone mad? Why am I still giving him a second chance when my heart is broken?
Dinner was over before I knew it. Caroline offered to help me clean up, but I declined. I'd rather clean up myself, I didn't want to have too much unnecessary interaction with her.
"Alright. Let me take care of James," she said.
"No need. Let me play with him. You better take a shower," Adam said, which Caroline answered with a nod.
I don't know if I should be relieved or feel guilty because I don't like her being around my husband and son, or if I should just admit out loud that it is her son. I watched as James' excitement increased greatly with Caroline's presence. Was I wrong to hate Caroline?
I dried the cutlery and put it away before walking over to my husband and son, yes, James will always be my son, even if not by blood.
"Are you happy today?" I asked James and he nodded happily. I kissed his forehead.
"You better take a shower, honey. You can sleep after that. Let me put James to bed. I haven't done that in a while," Adam said.
"Okay. I'll shower first." I left them.
Today I didn't enjoy my bath time because my heart wasn't at peace. I put on my pajamas and climbed into bed. Adam would be back in fifteen minutes. I picked up one of the books to pass the time.
I looked at the clock, it was already an hour and Adam wasn't back yet. It wasn't like usual. It usually only takes fifteen minutes to put James to bed. I better go check on him. I left the room and went to James' room.
I opened the door to find the room was dim and only James was fast asleep. I closed the door quietly so as not to wake him. I entered the room that was two doors down from James' room.
As I approached I could hear faint voices coming from inside. Voices I hoped I'd never hear from someone else living in my house. I wanted to confirm what I heard.
I slowly opened the door without making a sound. I saw my husband and Caroline kissing and hugging each other tightly. My heart, already broken, was now completely beyond saving.
Tears flowed. I wanted to scream in rage, but I couldn't do anything.
"Babe, let me marry you and give you more children. Don't you love children so much and want to have many children?" Caroline said.
"Yes. I want them. I'll marry you and have you bear my children. Give me more children," Adam replied as he continued to fuck Caroline.
I couldn't take it anymore. I left them and went back to my room.
Chapter 3
Today we went to the hospital with James to have his stitches removed. Only Adam and I went in with James. I don't know where Caroline went.
After we were done, we went back to the parking lot. I saw Caroline waiting for us in the car. For some reason, I felt bad.
Adam drove and I sat beside him while Caroline accompanied James to play in the back. On the way, I saw Adam keep glancing at James and Caroline's interaction. The thirty-minute drive from the hospital felt like two hours.
"Honey, I have to return to the office to pick up some things. I'll be right back," Adam said after dropping us off at home.
"Okay. Be careful on the way," I said. Adam just nodded and left.
I went inside. I saw James sleeping on the sofa. I quickly picked him up and took him to his room, letting him rest for being a good boy and not making any trouble while removing his stitches.
I went downstairs to the kitchen to prepare dinner. I decided to make James' favorite meal.
In the middle of cooking, I felt the need to go to the bathroom, so I quickly made my way to the bathroom, which was not far from the kitchen.
As I was about to wash my hands after using the toilet, I saw a pregnancy test kit. Not just one, but three different brands. All of them showed two lines, positive.
Caroline is pregnant? I wondered. There are only two grown women in this house. She and I. I was declared infertile a long time ago and hadn't taken a pregnancy test recently.
I felt my chest tighten and tears well up. There was nothing left to save in this marriage. Not my desire to have a child, not James who was like my own son, not even my feelings.
I left the bathroom with three pregnancy test kits. I looked for Caroline to confront her. There was no need to look for her, she had found me first.
"You found this?" she asked guiltlessly. Even I could hear the pride in her voice.
"Yes, I found it. You don't have to tell me that it's Adam's son. I already guessed. How long has it been?" I said.
"Four weeks. I went to see the doctor today," Caroline said. My heart was disappointed because there was nothing left to save in our marriage.
I'm tired of it all—really tired. I walked away from Caroline, who stopped me and grabbed the pregnancy test.
"Aren't you jealous? Don't you want a child? Wasn't I nice to you, letting you take care of my son, and now I'm going to give you another one," she mocked. I just smiled sarcastically.
"I'm letting you take care of my kids with Adam. You can take care of everything. Let me be with Adam forever. And you. You'll be nothing more than a nanny!"
I didn't want to take her at her word. I wanted to walk away, but Caroline held my hand.
"Oh, I have some good news for you. After hearing that I'm pregnant. I'm sure Adam will marry me and divorce you. Even though he loves you, his desire to have many children has never been replaced. He was always more special to you.
I felt Caroline had gone too far.
"And I remember that you and Adam had already transferred your wealth to James. After my marriage to Adam, people will remember me as Mrs. Whitewood, and you will be forgotten, even though you made Adam's fortune grow, even to this point. But you will never own it, it will all be mine!"
The emotion provoked me to slap her without thinking.
"Agatha!" snapped Adam, who I think had just arrived.
"Why did you slap Caroline? You're so disrespectful!" he said.
I forced a smile and turning away. Just as I took a step, a firm hand clamped around my wrist.
“You’ve got to stop with this attitude, Agatha.”
I saw Caroline pretend to be in pain.
"I was rude?! Isn't she more disrespectful?! Having an affair with a married man?!" I saw Adam's face turn red with anger after I said that.
"What?! Do you want to get angry?! Shouldn't I be angrier?!" I snapped.
Adam started to open his mouth, but I quickly cut him off by saying, "I don't want anything to do with you anymore! I'm sending you divorce papers!"
I immediately left the house with only my cell phone and wallet in my purse, which I left in the living room.
I drove away in my car. Once I was far enough away, I immediately called my lawyer and close friend, Alicia.
"Alice, help me get the divorce papers," I said as the call connected.
"Why do you want a divorce all of a sudden? Isn't your marriage to Adam fine?" she asked.
I explained the betrayal I had discovered last week. This time, I couldn't hold back the tears—tears of sadness, disappointment, hatred, and anger mixed together.
"Let me help you. I'll make sure you get a divorce from him right away because he's cheating on you. That's against the law. Can you get a sample for a DNA test? It will speed up the divorce process."
"I can get it for you."
After hanging up the phone, I booked a flight home two hours later.
Before the plane took off, I saved the video of Adam and Caroline cheating and sent it to the family group.
